On Sunday morning, around a hundred members of the National People's Front (E.LA.M) had attended at the Monastery of Macheras, the annual service of commemoration of the lieutenant of EOKA (war of liberation against the British) Gregorios Afxentiou.
The militants of the National People's Front (E.LA.M) with discipline and devotion that characterize them attended the ceremony and then marched to the statue of the hero.

Gregorios was burned in his hiding place (a cave on the mountain) after being betrayed by the Communists. A British troop surrounded the small cave and asked him to surrender.
Gregorios and his men responded with weapons.
The British soldiers after a tough battle could not enter. Afxentiou when he saw that the end was coming , he ordered his men to surrender, but he did not go out!
He preferred the heroic death!
